Meghan Markle Speaks Out on Stopping Misinformation on the Internet
The Duchess of Sussex hopes to put a stop to false media information coming from media outlets.
Recently, Markle spoke at Fortunes’ Most Powerful Women virtual summit about technology issues and the need to practice humane tech. The Most Powerful Women summit brings together influential women leaders in various industries such as business, government, and philanthropy.
For centuries, the media has been using the internet to take advantage of people’s vulnerability for profit as opposed to aligning media for human needs. Markle makes a firm statement about this, as she told the magazine’s senior editor Ellen McGrit, “We have got to all put our stock in something that is true, and we need to have reliable media and news sources that are telling us the truth…when you know something is wrong, report it, talk about it.”
“If you listen to what I actually say, it’s not controversial.”

The Duchess of Sussex also discussed her fair shares of false information on the internet, as she stated, “If you look back at anything I’ve said, what ends up being inflammatory is people’s interpretation of it. But if you listen to what I actually say it’s not controversial.”

Markle has had controversies since becoming a royal and hopes to spread awareness of misinformation on the internet. She later spoke about the ongoing pandemic that had taken thousands of people’s lives and mentioned why voting is important. She told Time, “Every four years we are told the same thing, that this is the most important election of our lifetime. But this one is. When we vote, our values are put into action and our voices are heard. Your voice is a reminder that you matter because you do and you deserve to be heard.”
