The film, titled Furiosa, will focus on the backstory of the female character by the same name. In the original film, Furisoa was portrayed by Oscar winner Charlize Theron, but for the prequel, Deadline has revealed that Split actress Anya Taylor-Joy will take the reigns of the title character in her young-adult days.

Taylor-Joy will appear alongside co-stars Chris Hemsworth and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. George Miller will be returning to direct, co-write, and produce the movie with his production partner Doug Mitchell.

In a past podcast discussion with Entertainment Weekly, Miller hinted at an interest in exploring Furiosa’s backstory in a future film. “She’s a pretty compelling character, so it’d be great to tell her story,” Miller said. “Her backstory is pretty interesting; we only allude to it in [Mad Max: Fury Road].”

This year, Taylor-Joy had a successful box-office run with her work in the period drama Emma and Marvel’s New Mutants. The actress recently finished filming on Edgar Wright’s latest project, Last Night in Soho that is set to premiere on April 23, 2021.

Hemsworth, best known for his portrayal of the beloved character Thor, recently appeared to an at-home audience in Netflix’s Extraction. His latest film, Thor: Love and Thunder, will start production in Australia in March of next year. More recently, the actor was cast in the upcoming Netflix original film Spiderhead alongside Jurnee Smollett and Miles Teller.

Abdul-Mateen II took home his first Emmy last month for his role in the popular HBO original series Watchmen. The actor is appearing in the recently postponed Candyman reboot and is signed on to be in the latest Matrix sequel.

Production dates and details about the film have not yet been revealed so stay tuned for more information as the project moves forward.
