Viola Davis has excited fans with an update on Black Don’t Crack, her new executive-produced comedy pilot set to release on ABC. Earlier this week, she reposted a photo with the star-studded cast along with a sneak peek of the pilot script as they began filming. It will be produced by JuVee Productions, the production company run by Davis and her husband, Julius Tennon.

Black Don’t Crack was first announced back in 2017, but had not yet been picked up by a network. Even though there was little information known about it then, fans were still excited that a comedy backed by Black writers and producers was coming to a primetime network. Their excitement has grown even more since finding out the cast.

On April 5, Davis took to Instagram sharing a photo of the cast alongside her captioned, “Excellence personified!!! Great day!!!”

Just a few weeks ago, the full cast was revealed, and it does not disappoint. The pilot will star Marlon’s Essence Atkins, Martin and My Wife and Kids star Tisha Campbell, The View’s Sherri Shepherd, and child star Tahj Mowry. The Mindy Project‘s Beth Grant and IT‘s Isaiah Mustafa will also have leading roles.

Black Don’t Crack is comes from the common saying that refers to the idea that Black people age slower than others. The pilot centers around three former sorority sisters, played by Shepherd, Atkins and Campbell, who lost contact after college but eventually reconnected later in life. All three women have contrasting personalities and lead different lives, but still mesh well when together.

Atkins will play Nia Hillis Davis, Campbell is Tasha Marks and Shepherd is Angela Wright. Mowry will play Angela’s son who lives in her basement and is struggling to jump-start his career. Grant will be Nancy, Angela’s mother-in-law who can be hard to please. Mustafa will play Charles Daniels, the co-owner of an Atlanta restaurant, owned by Tasha.

Regina Hicks is responsible for writing the pilot. She is most known for producing and writing hit shows like Insecure and Girlfriends. Larry Wilmore is another executive producer. He has worked on several projects including Insecure, grown-ish, and The Daily Show With Trevor Noah. Shepherd will also produce while Kelly Parks directs.

Many are waiting to finally get a chance to see the pilot, but no release date has been announced yet. They’re also hoping it gets picked up and turned into a full series. Be sure to look out for Black Don’t Crack, coming to ABC soon, and head over to JuVee Productions’ site to learn more about their projects.
