The Weeknd has just been announced as Songwriter of the Year at the 2021 ASCAP Pop Music Awards after a record-breaking year in his career. The show was held virtually between April 12 and 15 and honored songwriters, producers and publishers that helped make 2020's best hits. Perhaps the biggest was The Weeknd's "Blinding Lights," which spent countless weeks in the top ten of Billboard's Hot 100 chart. The song now has over 2 billion Spotify streams.

The Weeknd has just been announced as Songwriter of the Year at the 2021 ASCAP Pop Music Awards after a record-breaking year in his career. The show was held virtually between April 12 and 15 and honored songwriters, producers and publishers that helped make 2020’s best hits. Perhaps the biggest was The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights,” which spent countless weeks in the top ten of Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. The song now has over 2 billion Spotify streams.

If no one knew who The Weeknd was before 2020, then they probably know him now. He dominated the music industry and was one of the biggest artists of the year. His album After Hours reached the top spot in several countries and was named one of 2020’s best albums by Rolling Stone, Billboard, and many more.

The Canadian singer made a dark and uncertain time for most seem just a bit more hopeful with his upbeat songs and soulful voice, and After Hours helped many get through the pandemic. With a major tour that got rescheduled twice, The Weeknd finally got to perform in front of the world during this year’s Super Bowl Halftime Show.

The Weeknd being named ASCAP’s Songwriter of the Year didn’t come as a surprise to most considering his recent success. He received the honor earlier this week, and ASCAP called him “a brilliant creator with a one-of-a-kind voice.” The Weeknd helps write all of his music and is deeply involved in the creative process behind his songs and music videos.

Publisher of the Year went to Warner Chappell Music, the company behind “Blinding Lights” and The Weeknd’s “Heartless.” They were also recognized for other hits like Megan Thee Stallion and Beyoncé’s “Savage (Remix)” and Summer Walker’s “Playing Games.”

Fans are so proud of The Weeknd, and they couldn’t think of anyone more deserving of the award. Be sure to check out other highlights and winners from the ASCAP Pop Music Awards, and score tickets to The Weeknd’s 2022 After Hours Tour.
