Music Superstar Demi Lovato Is Out as Non-Binary

YouTube

Early on Wednesday, May 19, singer and songwriter Demi Lovato revealed to the world that they identify as non-binary and have changed their pronouns to they/them. Lovato announced this news via social media in a lengthy Twitter thread, and short video clip.

In the post, the singer announced that “Today is a day I’m so happy to share more of my life with you all- I am proud to let you know that I identify as non-binary & will officially be changing my pronouns to they/them moving forward.”

During the video, Lovato mentions how this will be the start of a new podcast series called “4D with Demi Lovato” which will dive deeper into discussions about being non-binary. Lovato defines living in the ‘fourth dimension’ as ” having conversations that transcend the typical discourse.” The podcast will also feature non-binary author and performer, Alok Vaid-Menon. Menon identifies as gender non-conforming, transfeminine, and uses singular they pronouns, and should add a good voice to Lovato’s podcast.

Additionally, Lovato is no stranger to talking about their personal life, as they released the YouTube Original documentary titled Dancing with the Devil which went into great detail about their past struggles with addiction and living in the spotlight. Lovato started acting very early on, having roles in Barney and later starring in Disney movies such as Camp Rock and was the lead in the TV show Sonny with a Chance. The documentary highlighted all of the various rumors surrounding Lovato and gave fans a huge insight into what life was really like for the pop star.

Lovato made it clear that this ”proud” moment is also “…for those out there that haven’t been able to share who they truly are with their loved ones. Please keep living in your truths & know I am sending so much love your way xox,” further acknowledging the challenges behind sharing these personal truths.

Demi has shared a lot with fans over the years, and these recent announcements sound like they will further Lovato’s continuation of self-reflection and acceptance.
