Anya Taylor-Joy was anything but happy when she watched herself in Robert Eggers’ The Witch. Most notably known as Beth Harmon in the Netflix hit series, The Queen’s Gambit, Taylor-Joy, 25, was ‘devastated’ after Eggers showed her and the rest of the cast the film on the big screen.

During an interview with, The Hollywood Reporter, Taylor-Joy opened up about her insecurity in her debut movie.

“Rob showed us the film maybe two hours before the audience screening, and I was devastated. I thought I’d never work again, I still get shivers thinking about it. It was just the worst feeling of, I have let down the people I love most in the world. I didn’t do it right. And I’m quite verbose, I like to talk, I like to communicate. I did not talk, I just cried. I couldn’t handle seeing my face that large”

The actress further added that her character, Thomasin, was described as “plain,” which heightened her desire to quit acting. Thankfully, Taylor-Joy didn’t give in, snagging roles in Split, Peaky Blinders, The Queen’s Gambit, and a reboot of Jane Austen’s novel Emma. She further explained the anxiety of her most recent role in Emma.

“I got Jane Austen’s Emma as a job, and that really panicked me, because it was a role that was supposed to be beautiful from the offset, and I hadn’t done that—I’d played creatures, outsiders, whatever. For some reason I guess that triggered some childhood trauma and I was like, ‘I can’t do it. There’s no way, I’m going to really let people down.”

Despite her insecurities, Taylor-Joy has channeled the negative feelings into something positive, earning Emmys and snagging major roles. She’s set to star in an unnamed movie directed by David O Russell with big named actors, such as Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, and Robert De Niro. In addition, she will star in another film called Last Night in Soho, directed by Edgar Wright alongside Doctor Who actor Matt Smith.

To say that Taylor-Joy is on a roll is an understatement and expect her to be cast in many more films and shows.
