Will Smith Stars in New Film ‘King Richard’
Will Smith has landed the lead role in the latest Warner Bros. film, King Richard, about the life of Serena and Venus Williams. The actor will star as the girls’ father, Richard Williams, as they become the next tennis superstars.
By the makers of Warner Bros., King Richard is based on the true story about the rise of tennis superstars Serena (Demi Singleton) and Venus Wiliams (Saniyya Sidney) from their supportive and dedicated father, Richard Williams (Smith). The new film has set its release date for later this year, on November 19, after COVID-19 delays pushed back the release date. The film will release in theaters and stream exclusively on HBO Max on November 19.
According to Warner Bros., the film “follows the journey of Richard Williams, an undeterred father instrumental in raising two of the most extraordinarily gifted athletes of all time, who will end up changing the sport of tennis forever. ‘Driven by a clear vision of their future and using unconventional methods, Richard has a plan that will take Venus and Serena Williams from the streets of Compton, California, to the global stage as legendary icons. ‘King Richard is a profoundly moving film that shows the power of family, perseverance, and unwavering belief as a means to achieve the impossible and impact the world.”
Reinaldo Marcus Green will direct the film with a script written by screenwriter Zach Baylin. Executive producers of the film include Will Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith, Caleeb Pinkett, James Lessiter, Trevor White, Tim White, and Lynn Harris.
The production company released the film’s trailer on YouTube on July 28. Since then, the two-minute and 35-second trailer has reached over three million views touching and warming hearts worldwide.
The actor had some special words to say in an Instagram post when the trailer was released. “One of the greatest honors as an actor is to be able to celebrate someone’s legacy while they’re still here creating it. I’ve gotten to do it a few times in my career playing @ceoofhappyness and @muhammadali, and every time it’s a fulfilling and expansive experience beyond compare,” Smith said.
