Weeekly Bounces Back With Latest Comeback ‘Holiday Party’
Weeekly returned after their hit “After School” with the release of “Holiday Party,” a summer-themed track, which premiered on August 4. Play Game: Holiday was the girls’ comeback EP with a total of five songs—”Weekend,” “Check It Out,” “Holiday Party,” “La Luna,” and “Memories Of Summer Rain.” The girls are known for their refreshing and unique concepts, and “Holiday Party” is no exception. This mini-album is also the first explicitly summer-themed comeback that the girls have had in their rookie career so far.
The girl group debuted a little more than a year ago on June 30, 2020, with “Tag Me (@Me).” They were trainees under Play M Entertainment and were previously known as the PlayM Girls. Before the existence of the PlayM Girls, members Soojin, Jiyoon, and Seoun appeared on the YG competition show Mixnine. The girls failed to reach the final ranks of Mixnine but then became members of a suspected girl group under Fave Entertainment called Fave Girls. This lineup had only five of the current seven members in Weeekly—Soojin, Jiyoon, Monday, Soeun, and Jaehee.
The girls’ debut was met with great success for a rookie girl group, its music video reaching ten million views in seven days and selling over 10,000 copies of their EP in eight days. Since then, they have had two comebacks with the EPs We Can and We Play. “After School,” from the We Play mini-album, went viral across several social media sites, mainly TikTok and Instagram. This song has almost eighty million more views than their other music videos on Youtube, at a whopping ninety million. Now, more and more people are paying attention to Weeekly as a strong contender for a rookie girl group compared to others that debuted around the same time, such as STAYC.
“Holiday Party” is an upbeat track with an exciting build-up and catchy beat. Not only do the girls have outstanding vocals, but they are also remarkable performers. “Holiday Party” is a song that allows the girls to showcase their abilities. It lives up to Weeekly’s pop-dance theme but gives off a unique whimsical feel.
With colorful outfits and whimsical effects, the music video has a fantasy-like, science-fiction feel. All of the girls have unique but matching outfits that fit into each scene of the video. They embody the fun vibe of the lyrics for “Holiday Party” as they sing and dance.
Monday begins the chorus by singing, “Holiday! Hold a party like it’s a holiday,” and Soeun continues later to say, “Play as loud as we want through the whole night.” The meaning behind the song and music video is to relax and enjoy yourself. Of all summer themes, this message is the most realistic and comforting to fans who need a moment of relaxation and fun as the close of the season nears us. As summer comes to an end, Weeekly nails the feeling of this fleeting emotion right on the nail.
Play Game: Holiday’s other songs are all captivating in their own right. The girls’ vocal range and ability allow them to make any track into a masterpiece. “Weekend” is another of their tracks that perfectly embodies the group’s core music style—a wonderful pre-chorus to a satisfying and catchy beat drop. All songs fit the concept for this comeback. Instead of the beach-themed summer concept like Twice’s “Alcohol-Free” or “Dance the Night Away,” Weeekly took a different route, but fans are still loving it, streaming the music video to sixteen million views in just four days.
Since going viral in 2021, the group has also commented on their rise to success. In an interview for KCON:TACT with NME, they asked the group how they felt after the success of “After School.” Soojin replied, “When I heard it for the first time, I remember that I thought of the sunset on my way home from school, and it was very overwhelming. I feel so happy and proud whenever I see people all over the world who love, listen to, and interact and enjoy ‘After School’.”
Soeun stated, “When I first listened to ‘After School,’ I thought it was a sentimental song that brings back memories. I think a lot of people felt the same way. The affection of everyone who listened to ‘After School’ really helped us a lot. Thank you!”
The girl group has since appeared on several YouTube specials for promoting Play Game: Holiday, such as Dingo Music and NORAE-ing. On August 8, four days after the comeback, they performed “Holiday Party” on Inkigayo. To keep up with Weeekly’s updates, follow their Instagram and Twitter accounts.
