Angelina Jolie has joined Instagram, and as her first post, she decided to bring awareness to the crisis in Afghanistan with a letter she received from a teenage girl. The actress has a significant influence, with more than 3 million followers, and she is using it to give a voice to those in need.

Angelina Jolie debuted on Instagram this past Friday, using the platform to draw attention to the situation in Afghanistan. For her first post, she shared a letter she received from a teenage girl from the country.

In the letter, the girl expressed her concerns about women’s rights being taken away once more due to the Taliban’s control of the country’s administration, writing that “we are imprisoned again.”

After the United States withdrew its troops from Afghanistan, the Taliban quickly rose to power. The girl, whose identity was blurred, says that they live in constant fear. She added that “we think our dreams are gone.”

The actress was always private and had no public social media presence. But, in light of the crisis in Afghanistan, she divulged on the post how she felt compelled to speak up on the issue. “Right now, the people of Afghanistan are losing their ability to communicate on social media and to express themselves freely.” Then she continued, “I’ve come on Instagram to share their stories and the voices of those across the globe who are fighting for their basic human rights.”

Jolie is a special envoy for the United Nations Refugee Agency. She was on Afghanistan’s border two weeks before September 11. In her caption, she shares that there she “met Afghan refugees who had fled the Taliban.” Later, Jolie detailed her experiences of seeing Afghan refugees fleeing the Taliban 20 years ago, “It is sickening to watch Afghans being displaced yet again out of the fear and uncertainty that has gripped their country.”

Moreover, the Oscar-winning actress became the fastest user to reach one million Instagram followers. Thus, beating recent record-holders: Taeil Moon, Rupert Grint, and David Attenborough. Jolie gained 2.1 million new followers in just three hours.

Angelina Jolie ended the post with an inspiring message. She wrote, “Like others who are committed, I will not turn away. I will continue to look for ways to help. And I hope you’ll join me.”
