‘Ted Lasso,’ ‘The Crown,’ ‘New Amsterdam,’ + More Snag HCA TV Awards
The Hollywood Critics Association held their first annual TV Awards virtually on August 29 after canceling their in-person awards show due to COVID-19 safety precautions.
The change to a virtual event did not stop the association from putting together a stellar awards show which had inclusivity and representation at its core. There were so many amazing women who won this year, as well as nods to the LGBTQIA+ community, highlighting their important contributions to the entertainment industry.
Some of the notable presenters included Olivia Holt (Cruel Summer), Yvette Nicole Brown (Big Shots), Lesley-Ann Brandt (Lucifer), Shannon Dang (Kung Fu), Thuso Mbedu (The Underground Railroad), as well as HCA members and many more.
Some of the winners that virtually attended included, but were not limited to, the cast of Cruel Summer (Freeform) which won Best Cable Series, Drama, as well as the cast of Ted Lasso (Apple TV Plus) which won for Best Streaming Series, Comedy. Jason Sudeikis (Ted Lasso) won Best Actor in a Streaming Series, Comedy, Brett Goldstein (Ted Lasso) received Best Supporting Actor in a Streaming Series, Comedy, and Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso) won Best Supporting Actress in a Streaming Series, Comedy, in a tie with Hannah Einbinder, Hacks (HBO Max).
Additional winners included cast from Netflix’s The Crown with Josh O’Connor taking home Best Actor in a Streaming Series, Drama, Emma Corrin winning Best Actress in a Streaming Series, Drama and Gillian Anderson winning Best Supporting Actress in a Streaming Series, Drama.
Billy Porter took home Best Actor in a Broadcast Network or Cable Series, Drama, and Mj Rodriguez won Best Actress in a Broadcast Network or Cable Series, Drama, both for Pose (FX). Michael K. Williams won Best Supporting Actor in a Broadcast Network or Cable Series, Drama for Lovecraft Country (HBO).
Special honors went to Thuso Mbedu as she accepted the TV Breakout Star Award, as well as the Legacy Award going to Cobra Kai. The HCA Spotlight Award went to Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, the HCA Impact Award went to New Amsterdam, and Tom Ellis was honored with the Pop Culture Icon Award for Lucifer. Rounding out the special awards, HCA presented their TV Icon Award to Marta Kauffman and the Virtuoso Award went to Bo Burnham.
Scott Menzel, CEO, and Chairman of the HCA opened the show with an amazing statement on the HCA’s mission on how there’s no need to scramble to become diverse as the HCA was founded on inclusivity in 2016. He also spoke about the enormous impact that TV has had in recent years, touching on themes of kindness, love, and meaningful and critical narratives.
He stated, “While these past 17 months have been incredibly difficult for many of us, television has once again become our best friend. Series like Ted Lasso, Hacks, and Young Rock provided us with a sense of joy and happiness during these troubled times. Dramatic series such as New Amsterdam, Lovecraft Country, and Pose were as entertaining as they were educational. These are only a few of the shows that were nominated, but it is so inspiring to see all of these passionate stories being told from diverse storytellers that aren’t afraid to touch upon timely issues including racism, COVID-19, and LGBTIQ rights.”
The past 51 days have been an absolute whirlwind. @NestorCine, @AlisaAGtalent, and I have been working around the clock to bring to life the Inaugural HCA TV Awards. The show switched from an indoor event to an outdoor event to a virtual event all within the span of 51 days.
