Doja Cat had a busy Sunday evening, making history with bold fashion statements while flaunting her boundless talent. Not only did the 25-year-old host the ceremony in Brooklyn on September 9, but she delivered a stellar performance and won Best Collaboration for “Kiss Me More” with SZA. Still, somehow Doja made time for five costume changes, starting strong on the red carpet and repeatedly topping each subsequent outfit.

Doja started in her most traditional outfit of the night. Designed by Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood, the outfit featured a black corset dress with purple draping and red tights. First seen on the FW runway in 2019, Doja and her stylist opted to switch out the original heeled loafer style with platform heels.

Following the stunning dress, she wore Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood again for her opening look, pairing a strapless black, corseted dress with dark blue fingerless gloves. The outfit was accessorized with a long, platinum wig and a chain belt as she gave an opening monologue celebrating MTV’s 40th anniversary.

Next up was a red tank top and matching pants, perfectly flowy garments for her acrobatic P!nk-esque performance of hit songs “Been Like This” and “You Right.” The look was fairly tame compared to the subsequent look, perhaps the most shocking look from the night: a midi dress that included Gustav Klimt-esque detailing around her face.

The dress sparked a lot of conversation as the singer took the stage to accept the award for Best Collaboration, taking it in stride and joking about the outlandish fashion choice, “I look like a worm.” It drew laughter from the audience and she continued, “that’s dope. I never thought I’d be dressed as a worm while accepting an award.”

After this, the singer came back in Vivienne Westwood, this time wearing a horse-patterned skirt and chair hat from the Spring and Summer of 2019 Andreas Kronthaler collection. Following the announcement for the nominees for Best New Artist, she laughed with the audience, sitting on her chair hat and saying, “I’m so relaxed.”

Finally, ending off the night, Doja pulled off one last switch. While bringing the show to a close, the host took the stage in a tall orange hat, pink blazer, and bold Claw shoes from Italian designer Avavav. The footwear might have topped the worm dress in terms of all the outrageous fashion choices made throughout the night.

With all of the bold styles Doja Cat flaunted at the ceremony, it’s no surprise she turned heads. But beyond her couture costumes, the “Say So” singer made VMA history as the first host to be nominated for video of the year that same year. She marks the third consecutive host for MTV’s VMAs since 2008-10 and it’s clear that she’s ready to keep showing the world what she’s got — and look great while doing it.
