Alessia Cara Reveals Tracklist to Upcoming Album ‘In The Meantime’

Alessia Cara has unveiled the album cover and tracklist to her highly-anticipated third studio album, In The Meantime. Cara has not released a new record since 2018’s The Pains of Growing.

Cara first began teasing new music in late June. The “Shapeshifter” singer began posting a series of Instagram posts without any captions, leading fans to believe a new era was fast approaching.

She shared four emojis on her third consecutive post: a lollipop, a sleeping symbol, a performing arts/theatre symbol, and a broken heart. Just one day later, on July 1, Cara continued with the cryptic posts, using the four emojis once more to create a mathematical equation where the four emojis equal two. Fans of the singer knew that this meant two songs were on the way.

On July 2, Cara confirmed the news herself, revealing that “Sweet Dream” and “Shapeshifter” would be two songs from her new era. The emojis were clever on her part, as a lollipop is sweet, and the sleeping symbol would indicate dreams. The latter half of the equation represents acting, as an actor can transform into different roles, thus changing shape. Cara explores this “shapeshifter” idea in her music video, where she also did a unique behind-the-scenes to explain the Italian family she created: The Pomodoro Family.

Cara finally revealed In The Meantime as the album title on September 2. She wrote to a fan on Twitter about the colorful cover art, naming “fish in a bowl,” “seclusion,” and “introspection” as the inspiration behind the stunning photo.

Alessia Cara loves to use symbolism. In The Meantime will be available to stream on all major music platforms on Friday, September 24. Fans can continue to stream “Sweet Dream” and “Shapeshifter” on Spotify until the album releases.
