Brendan Fraser Joins the Cast of DC’s New ‘Batgirl’ Movie

NBC

Brendon Fraser has officially joined the cast of DC’s upcoming new movie, Batgirl. The Mummy actor, 52, will be playing the movie’s villain, Firefly.

According to DC, Garfield Lynns, better known as “Firefly,” made his official debut in 1952, in Detective Comics, issue 184. Lynns was driven into insanity due to his obsession with flames. Soon after, he became an arsonist, leading to the birth of Firefly. Firefly has clashed with Batman and Robin and eventually Batgirl on numerous occasions. In one instance, the villain was able to trick Batman and Robin into thinking he set Gotham’s theater on fire with his technical abilities. Firefly is associated with Killer Moth–the first villain Batgirl fights against.

While the plot of Batgirl is still being kept secret, the film is expected to revolve around Barbara Gordon/Batgirl. The original Batgirl was Betty Kane, but she was replaced by Gordon six years later. It has been confirmed that Leslie Grace will be playing Batgirl/Barbara Gordon, J.K. Simmons as Commissioner James Gordon, and now Brendon Fraser as Firefly. Christina Hodson will serve as the screenwriter, Kristina Burr as the producer, and Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah as the movie’s directors

“With Batgirl, we hope to take the audience on a fun ride and see a different side of Gotham,” Burr said about the movie. She continued, “Christina’s script is crackling with spirit. Adil and Bilall have an excited and joyous energy, which is infectious, making them the perfect filmmakers for this Batproject. And I’m just psyched I get to be part of the DC universe, which is super cool.”

Although there’s no official release date, Batgirl is expected to be released sometime in 2022 on HBO Max. In the meantime, fans can stream DC films on HBO Max.
