The band, food, football game, and notable alumni are what most people think about when it comes to an HBCU homecoming. One thing that tops it all at an HBCU; the fashion.

The aesthetic of an HBCU homecomings fashion is unmatched. Students from across the country plan their outfits ahead of time because of the anticipated killer outfits. Wearing your school colors is one thing, but being creative with your outfits is something HBCU students have bodied.

HBCUs have produced some of the world’s most famous people. These notable alumni include Taraji P. Henson (Howard University), Megan Thee Stallion (Texas Southern University), Samuel L. Jackson (Morehouse), Lala Anthony (Howard University), and many more.

With this year being the first homecoming after COVID-19, many students are using this opportunity to show their best outfits. Kathryn Lewis is a FAMU (Florida Agricultural And Mechanical University) graduate; she celebrated homecoming this year with her killer orange and green outfit from ZARA.

“Homecoming is almost a fashion show. Everyone wants to wear their best outfits and leave a lasting impression. During homecoming is the time to show out in a way you may not be able to on a typical day. It’s an outlet to express one’s creativity and show pride for your alma mater,” stated Lewis.

From the deep south, all the way up the east coast, students touch on different aesthetics Ranging from the 1950s to the early 2000s. With the schoolgirl look coming back into style, many students are repping their school doing the classic schoolgirl skirt with the University’s shirt.

Homecoming is also a time for HBCU stylists to showcase their best products for the world to see. The trending basketball purse, created by Andrea Bergart, has become a fashion statement. Posing with the Bedazzled purse is Taryn Henry, a junior in the Cardiorespiratory science program at Tennessee State University. Taryn has many obligations, including being the 2020-2021 Miss Freshman and a part of the dynamic.

“Fashion during homecoming is unique because so many freelance designers have a time to present new trends. It is amazing to see all the ensembles that are created and also how they are styled,” stated Henry.

Every year a new trend pops up, and people gravitate towards it. This year was a year of popping out and starting recent trends. You can for sure count on an HBCU student to lead the way.
