Martin Scorsese will direct a biopic about the iconic rock band, The Grateful Dead, which will be available to stream on Apple TV.

Jonah Hill will star as Jerry Garcia in the flick. The 21 Jump Street star will also be producing the film alongside Matt Dines. Screenwriters Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, acclaimed for their work on the script of American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J. Simpson, will be penning the screenplay for the biopic. Scott Alexander tweeted his excitement for the upcoming project on Thursday.

The band itself will be heavily involved in the production of the film. The executive producers of the film, Eric Eisner and Bernie Cahill, will be working alongside band members Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart, and Bill Kreutzmann, who will be credited as the executive producers of their own story. Jerry Garcia’s legacy will be survived in the production process by his daughter, Trixie Garcia.

The prospect of another Martin Scorsese film is exciting. Apple can celebrate working alongside the legendary director once again, as filming just wrapped for his newest Apple film, Killers of the Flower Moon, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, and Jesse Plemons.

Scorsese has worked on a documentary about The Grateful Dead before, as well as other documentaries about rock bands, but this is his first venture into a musician-centric biopic. Fans of the director are excited to see him take this step, and hopes are high given his documentary work with musicians.

This new project will not be the only time Scorsese has worked with Hill, the first being on The Wolf of Wall Street. Not only is the prospect of their reunion exciting, but audiences are generally intrigued by Jonah Hill as Jerry Garcia.

The specific narratives of the film have yet to be released, but with the band’s rich history that dates back to the rise of the counterculture in the 1960s and such a talented crew onboard to tell that history, the film is sure to recount an enticing story.
