‘The Odyssey’ Boosts Sicily’s Favignana as New Dream Vacation Trend
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has already devoured the global box office, and now it is casting a very different kind of spell, transforming a little-known jewel off the coast of Sicily into the travel world’s most coveted new destination. Much of the film’s vision of Ithaca was captured on Favignana, the butterfly-shaped island at the heart of Sicily’s Egadi archipelago, and ever since audiences first drank in its turquoise coves and sun-bleached cliffs, wanderlust has done the rest.
Where Was The Odyssey Filmed in Sicily?
To find the perfect Ithaca, Nolan and his production designer Ruth De Jong settled on the fifteenth-century Castello di Santa Caterina, a dramatic fort perched atop Monte Santa Caterina with sweeping, three-hundred-and-sixty-degree views across the Mediterranean. The island doubled as the long-lost home of Odysseus, Penelope, and their son Telemachus, and the production spread out across Favignana’s coastline as well, filming among its famous crystalline coves and on the tiny neighboring islet of Preveto, while John Leguizamo’s loyal swineherd Eumaeus was given a humble hut all his own. As Variety reported, the choice of such untouched, story-rich locations is precisely what has captured travelers’ imaginations.
The ‘Nolan Effect’ and the Set-Jetting Boom
The Italian press has already coined a name for the phenomenon, the “Nolan effect,” and the numbers behind it are staggering. Favignana has been heavily promoted since the trailer arrived, and early estimates suggest the island could see roughly $287 million in tourism over the next three years and more than $500 million in the long run, outpacing even the wave that HBO’s The White Lotus sent to Taormina. It is the latest and largest example of “set-jetting,” the booming travel trend of chasing the real-world settings of beloved films and series, which, as Euronews noted, has turned this into “The Odyssey summer.” The Sicilia Film Commission is thrilled, with its chief telling Variety that the region is proud to be “a real protagonist” of the film.
Sicily’s Moment, From Dua Lipa to Homer
Favignana is only the newest chapter in what has been a golden year for the island. Sicily also hosted Dua Lipa and Callum Turner’s swoon-worthy June wedding in Palermo, a celebration that went viral around the world and delivered its own considerable boost to the region. The love affair runs both ways, too, since Italy has become one of the film’s strongest markets, ranking as its fourth-highest-grossing territory worldwide. For the literary-minded traveler, there may be no more perfect souvenir than reading Emily Wilson’s acclaimed translation, the first of Homer’s epic by a woman, on Favignana’s shores. Homer sent Odysseus wandering these waters nearly three thousand years ago, and thanks to Nolan, a whole new generation is ready to set sail after him.
