Academy Award-winning actress Halle Berry will be receiving the People’s Icon Award at this year’s People’s Choice Awards, airing on December 7 on both NBC and E!.

On Friday, November 19, both NBC and E! announced that Halle Berry is this year’s recipient of the People’s Icon Award. The PCA Award-winner and seven-time nominee will receive the award from friend and collaborator Cardi B. Berry will be honored for her contributions to film and TV, including her performance and directorial debut for the film Bruised, which hits Netflix on November 24. The actress teamed up with Grammy-winning rapper Cardi B for the film’s soundtrack.

Jen Neal, EVP, shared a lengthy statement behind Berry’s well-deserved honor. She revealed, “Throughout her career, Halle Berry has broken down barriers, directed, and starred in diverse roles that have paved the way for others in the industry. One of Berry’s most memorable performances had been her role as Leticia Musgrove in the 2001 film, Monster’s Ball. The role won Berry her first Academy Award, making her the first Black woman to win the Best Actress category.

After such a historic win, the actress has gone on to win an Emmy, Golden Globe, SAG, and NAACP Image Award for her performance in HBO’s telefilm, Introducing Dorothy Dandridge, which she also produced.

Neal added, “In addition to her filmography accolades and trendsetting ethos, Berry is known for her philanthropic work with women, children, and underserved communities. She is an icon of our time and for all these reasons and more, we are honored to present her with ‘The People’s Icon’ award.’” Aside from her work in film, one of the organizations that are near and dear to Berry’s heart is the Jenesse Center in Los Angeles. The center supports victims of domestic violence and aims to change the pattern of abuse in the lives of women and children. She supports numerous other charities and organizations.

In addition, Berry founded  rē•spin, a platform created to provide broader access to health and wellness content and products through inclusivity and conversation. According to the website, Berry writes, “ My health journey started when I was diagnosed with diabetes at 22 years old, it was a moment I’ll never forget. Inspired by this, I launched rē•spin through my own health transformation and desire to connect with others through health, wellness, and spirituality.”

Congratulations to Halle Berry on this well-deserved honor. Be sure to watch the People’s Choice Awards on December 7, airing on NBC and E! at 9 pm ET/PT.
