Adele was moved to tears Sunday night when a teacher from the singer’s past surprised her onstage at the ITV concert special, An Audience with Adele. Countless A-list celebrities packed the UK-based concert hall. But none were as important as Adele’s former English teacher.

It’s hard to imagine that Adele – someone who has inspired millions of fans around the world – once stood where we are. But during a Q&A with the audience, actress Emma Thompson wanted to know just that.

“Yeah, I had a teacher at Chestnut Grove [Academy] who taught me English,” the “Easy On Me” singer responded. “That was Ms.McDonald. She really made us care, and we knew that she cared about us.”

It was Ms.McDonald who inspired Adele’s love for writing. Many years and four studio albums later, Adele reunited with her “bloody cool” teacher.

In a clip shared on Twitter by ITV, we see Adele begin to tear up as Miss McDonald approaches the stage. The two embraced and shared kind words as if there was no audience in front of them. “I’m so proud of you,” Ms.McDonald told Adele.

“I haven’t seen you since I was, like, 12,” Adele shared in the clip. “I’ve still got all my books, you know? I’ve got all my books from when you were my teacher.”

Of course, Adele is known for her quips. After speaking to one another briefly she shared with the audience, “now I’ve got to get my whole face re-done.” For once, Adele was brought to tears at one of her own shows.

As the night came to an end, Adele posted to social media thanking everyone for their support.

“Home Sweet Home. I’ve always dreamt of doing An Audience With… There was so much love in the room for each other, it felt like such a gig,” Adele wrote on Instagram. “Everyone was raucous and bang up for it! And my teacher Ms McDonald was there, it was just heaven.”

Between her live concert in Los Angeles, an interview with Oprah Winfrey, and the release of 30, the 33-year-old singer appears unstoppable. Be sure to stream her latest album now to see where her inspiration first came.
