Prior to its box office debut on December 25, the film will screen at IMAX theaters worldwide on December 5. Following the official release in theaters, the film will be available to stream on Apple TV+ on January 14.

In the spirit of giving, the “Shakespeare At the Cinema” event goes beyond a simple first-come-first-serve screening at select theaters in North America. After the showing, Joel Coen and Frances McDormand will participate in a live Q&A to be live-streamed from AMC Lincoln Square in New York City.

Over the years, there have been many takes on Shakespeare’s classic, but what sets The Tragedy of Macbeth apart may just be the title itself. In an interview with The Film Stage, McDormand explains, “we’re calling it The Tragedy of Macbeth, which I think is an important distinction.”

Over the years, there have been many takes on Shakespeare’s classic, but what sets The Tragedy of Macbeth apart may just be the title itself. In an interview with The Film Stage, McDormand explains, “we’re calling it The Tragedy of Macbeth, which I think is an important distinction.”

She elaborates that through some creative liberties, “the Macbeths are older. Both Denzel and I are older than what is often cast as the Macbeths.” This distinction is key as it emphasizes that this “is their last chance for glory.”

With this distinction having a significant impact on the tone of the black-and-white film, it adds a more chilling take to the tale. Starring alongside Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand, Bertie Carvel, Alex Hassell, Corey Hawkins, Harry Melling, Brendan Gleeson, Moses Ingram, and Kathryn Hunter also join the cast.
