Hulu Releases New Trailer for Conversations With Friends
Hulu’s next big project is on the horizon. Conversations With Friends, the 2017 debut novel by Sally Rooney, is being adapted into a 12-episode series.
Hulu unveiled the latest drama to their list, and it is a good one. Conversations With Friends follows Frances (Alison Oliver in her television debut), a Trinity College student who navigates a series of relationships, beginning with her ex-girlfriend, Bobbi (Sasha Lane). Despite their breakup three years ago, the pair remains inseparable, performing spoken word poetry together in Dublin. The duo befriends Melissa (Jemima Kirke), an older writer that quickly grows fascinated by the former flames.

The series becomes dicey once Bobbi and Frances begin to spend time with Melissa and her husband, Nick (Joe Alwyn). The press release reads, “While Melissa and Bobbi flirt with each other openly, Nick and Frances embark on an intense secret affair that is surprising to them both. Soon the affair begins to test the bond between Frances and Bobbi, forcing Frances to reconsider her sense of self and the friendship she holds so dear.”

Conversations With Friends hails from the same creative team behind the hit series, Normal People. The series launched the careers of Paul Mescal (Netflix’s The Lost Daughter) and Daisy Edgar-Jones (Hulu’s Fresh). Lenny Abrahamson, the series’ director, will also serve as an executive producer alongside Element Pictures’ Ed Guiney, Emma Norton, and Andrew Lowe. The pair collaborated with screenwriter Alice Birch, with director Leanne Welham helming five episodes.
Abrahamson spoke of the comparisons between Conversations and Normal People, stating, “The moods of the two shows definitely overlap in places, but Conversations is a little bit messier than Normal People. The relationships are messier, and there are more of them.” He also reveals Alison Oliver’s character, “Frances is such a particular person — sometimes glorious, sometimes deeply frustrating with a tendency to hide herself.”

In other exciting news, Phoebe Bridgers’ angelic voice plays throughout the trailer. The track is titled “Sidelines,” with the full version coming on April 15.
Conversations With Friends promises to be a convoluted story about relationships and their consequences. The series will hit Hulu on May 15. The trailer is available to watch above.
