Selena Gomez Admits Not Being on Social Media Has Helped With Mental Health
Selena Gomez, one of the most followed people in the world with more than 310 million Instagram followers, has admitted that she has not used the platform in more than four years. Not only is she an actress, singer, and beauty entrepreneur but a mental health advocate as well.
The 29-year-old singer-actress launched a mental health resource site called “Wondermind,” in which she discusses her mental health journey and how it took a positive turn when she decided to take a break from social media. “I haven’t been on the internet in four and a half years,” she revealed. “It has changed my life completely.”
Although Gomez assists her team in creating content, she is not the one posting it. “I am happier, I am more present, I connect more with people,” she vocalizes regarding social media. “It makes me feel normal.”

Wondermind, created by Gomez, her mother Mandy Teefy, and businesswoman Daniella Pierson aims to destigmatize and democratize mental health resources. The digital platform will provide expert-backed content and resources free of charge. Within the site, people are offered tools to practice “mental fitness,” including psychological practices and newsletters.
For many years now, Gomez has been open about her struggles with bipolar disorder and anxiety, which she says were brought forth by life in the public eye. “I can’t believe that I’m where I am mentally, just because of how I took the necessary steps in order to kind of remove myself from that… because it’s just not normal,” she stated about fame.
“If I’m known for anything, I hope it’s simply just for the way I care about people,” Gomez proclaims. The newsletter for Wondermind is officially live; sign up to read the first issue.
