Hayley Kiyoko to Release New Queer Single
After teasing a new queer anthem on Twitter earlier this month, Hayley Kiyoko officially announced she will be releasing “For The Girls” in May. The American actress and singer took to social media on Wednesday to announce the exciting news. “MY NEW SINGLE “FOR THE GIRLS” DROPS MAY 20TH 🌈 Pre-save link in my bioooo 🥰,” Kiyoko wrote on Instagram.
The 31-year-old songwriter has been an LGBTQ+ icon in the music industry for years. So much so, her fans often refer to her as “Lesbian Jesus.” From her groundbreaking “Girls Like Girls” music video to her sapphic single “Chance,” Kiyoko has dedicated her career to increasing visibility for women-loving-women.
“As an openly lesbian Asian-American pop star, her openness in her lyrics and her outspoken activism for queer youth is definitely creating important conversations and change in a more traditional culture,” GLAAD’s head of talent, Anthony Ramos, told TODAY.

In the “For The Girls” teaser she shared on April 7, Kiyoko wrote, “It’s gonna be May, and it’s gonna be gay.” “Summer’s for the girls, the girls, I like girls,” the pop star sang in the snippet. With its energetic beat and clever lyrics, the Disney alum’s upcoming hit sounds like it might just be the song of the summer.
After announcing the single’s release date on social media, fans could barely contain their excitement. “THANK YOU FOR ALWAYS REMINDING ME HOW GAY I AM, LESBIAN JESUS 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🌈🌈🌈🌈 #praythegaytostay,” commented one follower on Instagram.
