Fans of Crazy Rich Asians are rejoicing as the franchise continues to grow. It was recently announced that a spinoff film is in early development. The movie is based on the second book in the Crazy Rich Asians trilogy, China Rich Girlfriend.

Gemma Chan and Harry Shum Jr. will serve as the lead characters, and fans couldn’t be any more excited. The film will focus on Astrid Young Teo’s (Gemma Chan) budding romance with Charlie Wu (Harry Shum Jr.). Nick Young’s (Henry Golding) cousin Astrid is newly single and rekindles her relationship with her first love Charlie Wu. Astrid and Charlie were previously engaged, but Astrid’s parents disapproved of Charlie, so they broke them up.

While Astrid and Charlie’s romance is the main plot, the film will also cover Rachel’s (Constance Wu) and Nick’s (Henry Golding) characters on their trip to Shanghai.

The 2018 film Crazy Rich Asians was a box office success and received a number of nominations, including a SAG nomination for Feature Cast Ensemble, Best Comedy/Musical Golden Globe nomination, and won the Critics Choice award for Best Comedy. There is no doubt that China Rich Girlfriend will follow suit with these accolades.

There are no additional details about China Rich Girlfriend as of yet, but for now, you can watch Crazy Rich Asians on HBO Max.
