Rina Sawayama Releases New Single ‘Catch Me in the Air’
Rina Sawayama is back with more music. The “Dynasty” singer shared the second single off her upcoming album, Hold the Girl.
On June 27, Rina Sawayama released “Catch Me in The Air,” a track that she wrote as a tribute to her mother. Sawayama’s mother raised the singer as a single parent. She states of the single, “I really wanted to write about this weird relationship with single parents. You do catch each other in the air.”
The pop track follows “This H*ll,” released last month. The singer drew inspiration from country music, striving to write the quintessential country-pop anthem of the summer. She states, “The past couple of years I’ve been listening to lots of female country singers and wanted to write a euphoric and tongue-in-cheek country-pop song. Country music at its core to me represents comfort, brilliant storytelling, and authentic expression of the writer’s reality.”
“Catch Me in The Air” resulted from one of the singer’s first sessions during the lockdown. In an interview with Zane Lowe, she reveals, “Sometimes I feel really ready for the emotional work. And then other times I’m like, ‘Oh, I’m too tired. I just want to write just a stupid, silly song.’ And sometimes I do write stupid, silly songs that don’t mean anything. But I feel like I’m able to emotionally process that feeling when I write a song about it, so it feels really nice, and to be able to share it, and then have that same emotional response from other people is amazing, so it’s worth doing.”
