A new Rina Sawayama era is upon us. The “Chosen Family” singer shared the first single, “This H*ll,” off her forthcoming second studio album, Hold The Girl. The record will be released on September 2.

Rina Sawayama took to Instagram to excitedly share the album cover to Hold The Girl, as well as some details about “This H*ll.” The single was written and co-produced by Sawayama, Lauren Aquilina, Clarence Clarity, Paul Epworth, and Vixen.

She writes in her post, “I wanted to write a western pop song that celebrated COMMUNITY and LOVE in a time where the world seemed h*llish. This H*ll is better with you.”

Sawayama expressed how fun it was to write a country-pop song, a genre much different than her debut, Sawayama, released in April 2020. The record was supported by her friend-turned collaborator, Elton John. John and Sawayama shared a duet of her song, “Chosen Family,” where John plays the piano effortlessly.

In a press release promoting “This H*ll,” the British-Japanese singer states, The past couple of years I’ve been listening to lots of female country singers and wanted to write a euphoric and tongue-in-cheek country-pop song. Country music at its core to me represents comfort, brilliant storytelling, and authentic expression of the writer’s reality.”

In addition to writing a smash country-pop song, Sawayama felt that she needed to use her platform to spread love and focus her attention on basic human rights, specifically in the LGBTQ+ community. She adds, “It’s an important song for me given the human rights that are being taken away from minorities at a rapid rate in the name of traditional religious beliefs, more specifically I was thinking about the rights being taken away from the LGBTQ community when I wrote this song.”

We cannot be more excited to hear more of Sawayama’s latest era. Fans can stream “This H*ll” on all major music platforms.
