Viola Davis May Be the Next New Actor to Achieve EGOT Status
Viola Davis is on her way to making history. Grammy nominations were announced on Tuesday, November 15, and the actress received her first nomination for her memoir, Finding Me.
Academy Award-winning actress Viola Davis is one award shy of attaining the coveted EGOT title. To earn EGOT status, a performer must win an Emmy, Oscar, Tony, and Grammy awards. Davis’ Grammy nod came in the category of Best Audio Book, Narration, and Storytelling Recording, for narrating her riveting story, Finding Me. Davis is in the running alongside Mel Brooks, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Jamie Foxx, and Questlove.
The Fences actress took to Instagram to express how exciting it is to have Finding Me Grammy nominated. She writes, “Thank you all for reading and listening to my story. ❤”
Viola Davis is used to making history in the entertainment industry. She is known as one of the most nominated Black actresses in Oscars history after being recognized for her role as Ma Rainey in the 2020 film, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
Davis introspects on her nomination streak, stating, “For me, it’s a reflection of the lack of opportunities and access to opportunities people of color have had in this business. If me, going back to the Oscars four times in 2021, makes me the most nominated Black actress in history, that’s a testament to the sheer lack of material there has been out there for artists of color.”
Despite these setbacks, Davis finally won Best Supporting Actress starring opposite Denzel Washington in Fences. This happened to be the same role where she won her second Tony in 2010. Her first Tony came in 2001, for her portrayal of Tonya in King Hedley II. In 2015, she made Emmys history when she became the first woman of color to achieve an Outstanding Lead Actress win for her unforgettable role as Annalise Keating in How To Get Away With Murder.
Congratulations to Viola Davis on an incredible honor. We hope to see her make history once more as an EGOT winner. This year’s Grammys will air live on Sunday, February 5. In the meantime, fans can watch Davis’ groundbreaking role in HTGAWM on Netflix.
