A year ago today, Abbott Elementary premiered on ABC, and fans have not looked back; recently, Emmy-winner and star of the mockumentary Quinta Brunson graced the cover of Cosmopolitan and sat down to discuss the show’s success and the significance of a healthy work environment.

Before breaking records on ABC, Brunson was a staple at Buzzfeed and made her mark in meme history with the viral “he got money” video. Although she had a great experience, that’s not the case for some of her coworkers, and while she realizes that there wasn’t much she could do, she mentioned, “It felt weird to feel that oblivious. I never wanna have that feeling again.”

Now, as the head of all things Abbott, Brunson prioritizes creating a positive work culture with her team of 300 people, including actors, camera operators, writing staff, and production assistants.

Brunson stated, “I wanna make sure that everyone is taken care of, that we’re not working everyone to death. It’s tiring work. Everyone’s waking up really early, the cast, the entire production crew…But still, I like to check in. I just wanna make sure people feel supported, taken care of, heard. I wanna have an open relationship with the cast, and that requires communication and patience.”

Although Brunson and the rest of the cast and crew of Abbott Elementary are going to catch up on some well-deserved rest during their upcoming hiatus, Brunson feels that the cast and crew are in it for the long haul, which may be true as Abbott Elementary leads the nominations of this year’s Critics Choice Awards.

The series racked up six nominations in the categories of Best Actress in a Comedy Series (Quinta Brunson), Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series (Chris Perfetti and Tyler James Williams), Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series (Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph) and Best Comedy Series.

As season 2 is well underway and the number of viewers continues to grow each week, fans can expect many more laughs and lessons to come. Abbott Elementary airs on Wednesdays at 9:00 P.M. on ABC and the next day on Hulu. Check out Quinta Brunson’s full feature on Cosmopolitan here.
