Kelly Clarkson Delivers Beautiful New Cover of Mazzy Star’s ‘Fade Into You’
Kelly Clarkson delivered a beautiful rendition of Mazzy Star’s “Fade Into You” on ‘Kellyoke,’ her popular singing segment on The Kelly Clarkson Show.
Kellyoke has had a strong alternative-rock presence these days. Kelly Clarkson, the powerhouse vocalist, has covered several musicians of the genre, including Blink-182, The Offspring, and Arctic Monkeys. Clarkson was really feeling the nineties nostalgia, opting to cover Hope Sandoval, the ethereal frontwoman behind Mazzy Star.

Mazzy Star was an alternative-rock band that was formed in 1988 in Santa Monica, California. The band was initially called Opal, but the group disbanded when Kendra Smith left. David Roback, a member of Opal, sought out his friend Hope Sandoval to become the lead vocalist of Mazzy Star when Smith left the band.

Mazzy Star released a string of hits, including “Fade Into You,” “Flowers in December,” and “Five String Serenade.” “Fade Into You” appears on the band’s second album, So Tonight That I Might See. Other records include Among My Swan (1996), She Hangs Brightly (1990), and more recently, Still (2018).
Roback revealed about the dreamy track, “You have to leave something to people’s imagination, so they feel they can participate. Music is music. We don’t want to be part of that over-determination. We feel you should be able to shut your eyes and listen to it.”
After David Roback passed away in 2020, Sandoval posted a poem about her dear friend and collaborator. She writes that the world is “filled with the comforting sadness that holds us together.”
I just found out David Roback of Mazzy Star died two years ago. Hearing that made me so sad. Then I read Hope Sandoval’s poem to him after he died and I’m heartbroken 🙁 pic.twitter.com/2P3ybDzlvA

The track is not easy to sing, but Clarkson does it very well. Her vocals soared throughout the cover, and she never did too much to lose its aching quality.
