In 2004, Mean Girls was one of the world's biggest teen movies. Almost twenty years later, a remake is in the works, but with a twist: it's a musical adaptation of the 2018 Broadway production. Fans of the film and the musical are excited about this musical film. However, is there some mean girl drama behind the scenes against the original cast?

Original Mean Girls Stars Not Involved with Vibrant New Musical Adaptation Because of Money Disagreements

In 2004, Mean Girls was one of the world’s biggest teen movies. Almost twenty years later, a remake is in the works, but with a twist: it’s a musical adaptation of the 2018 Broadway production. Fans of the film and the musical are excited about this musical film. However, is there some mean girl drama behind the scenes against the original cast?

Although the original cast of Mean Girls would have loved to be involved with this new iteration, they have not been offered fair pay by Paramount Pictures, the production company. This is holding off on any deals or negotiations of a Mean Girls reunion with the original main actresses.

Amanda Seyfried originally starred as Karen Smith in the film, weighed in on this situation. “I’m still hoping for a miracle. It’s not really up to us,” she explained. When asked if the original cast were into it, she commented, “All four of us are 100% into it,” referring to her Mean Girls costars Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, and Lacey Chabert, who performed as Cady, Regina, and Gretchen respectively.

Mean Girls follows new student Cady (Lohan) at North Shore High school. There, she encounters the Plastics, the most popular girls in school. The Plastics include the icy leader Regina (McAdams), the follower Gretchen (Chabert), and the dumb Karen (Seyfried). However, when Cady befriends outcasts Janis (Lizzy Caplan) and Damian (Daniel Franzese), she decides to take down the Plastics. Along the way, she learns about friendship, crushes, and the importance of high school.

The film was a hit, making over 130 million dollars at the box office, and has a legacy that lasts today. The musical was able to replicate that success in 2018. The musical racked up 12 Tony Award nominations, the most nominations of 2018. Unfortunately, it closed on Broadway in March 2020 due to the pandemic. However, the show is still touring nationwide to excite audiences everywhere. Combining the film and musical aspects may lead to a smashing success.

Despite problems acquiring the original lead actresses, two people from the original cast have already confirmed they will be in this musical film. Not only that, but they will be reprising their original roles. Tina Fey will reprise her role as math teacher Ms. Norbury. Fey also wrote the film, the musical, and this upcoming adaptation. In addition, Tim Meadows will be reprising his role as Principal Duvall. Hopefully, more originals can join the fold.

Fey and Meadows will join the rest of the exciting Mean Girls musical movie cast. There is Renee Rapp as Regina, a role that she also performed on Broadway. There is also Angourie Rice as Cady, Bebe Wood as Gretchen, Avantika as Karen Auli’i Cravalho as Janis, Jaquel Spivey as Damian, Christopher Briney as Aaron, and Jenna Fischer as Regina’s mother.

Rapp is fully on board with the original leads of Mean Girls making an appearance. Recently, when asked if she would want Seyfried to make a cameo after she expressed interest, Rapp exclaimed, “I would kiss her feet. Absolutely I would be down.” Hopefully, Paramount realizes the monetary worth of the original actresses. If they were in this new film, that would be so fetch.
