Jenna Ortega, Camila Mendes, and Danny Ramirez will star in A24’s new film Alba.

Jenna Ortega is becoming one of the biggest names in Hollywood. Coming off her first season of Netflix’s series Wednesday breaking records and being renewed for a second season, the actress is also starring in Scream VI, coming out March 10.

Camila Mendes is most commonly known for her roles in Riverdale and Do Revenge and Danny Ramirez for Top Gun: Maverick and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

The film will be produced by Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap Entertainment company and directed by Francisca Alegria. Algeria has won awards for her 2016 short film “And the Whole Sky Fit in the Dead Cow’s Eye.”

Alba will be adapted from a play called “The House of Bernarda Alba” by Frederico García Lorca, written in 1936. The play follows the lives of women in rural Spain in the 20th century. Bernarda Alba’s husband dies, and she consequently forces her five unmarried daughters to isolate on their estate with her for an eight-year period of mourning. During this period the women are not allowed to have any contact with the outside world or any men.

She allows her eldest daughter, Angustias, to marry a wealthy man as the one exception to her rule. Bernarda begins to lose control over her daughters as the wedding approaches, and they start to rebel.

Fans of the play are worried about Danny Ramirez’s role in the film. In the play, men are rarely ever on stage as it is very woman-centered.

There are also concerns about the modernization of the film adaptation. The film will take place in modern-day Miami. This is opposed to “The House of Bernarda Alba,” set in Spain in the 20th century.

Alba is looking to begin filming this summer.
