On March 14, news came out that the first half of the Wicked film adaptation, Wicked: Part 1, will have its theatrical release date moved to November 27, 2024.

Jon M. Chu, the film’s director, took to Twitter to share the exciting news. In his tweet, he explained, “We are deep into production on WICKED and everyday we get more and more excited to share with u the mischief we’ve been up to.” Subsequently, he elaborated, “OUR NEW RELEASE Date is NOV 27th 2024! A little Thanksgiving treat!”

The film was originally scheduled for a December 25, 2024 premiere. According to sources, however, “the studio felt it would be better positioned around Thanksgiving compared to Christmas.” Nonetheless, many people took to social media to share excitement about the new release date.

The musical Wicked is based on the Gregory Maguire novel of the same name, which was also a revisionist exploration of the L. Frank Baum’s novel, The Wizard of Oz. The musical explores the character dynamics and history between Elphaba Thropp and Glinda Arduenna Upland. Specifically, the plot delves into how Elphaba became known as “The Wicked Witch of the West” and Glinda became “The Good Witch” before Dorothy arrived in Oz.

The film adaptation will be split into two parts, aptly titled Wicked: Part 1 and Wicked: Part 2– with a year between each film’s release date. In an Instagram post, Chu explained, “it became increasingly clear that it would be impossible to wrestle the story of Wicked into a single film without doing some real damage to it.”

The film has tremendous hype around it thanks to the musical theater fans who can not wait to see it come to the big screen and its star-studded cast. Cast in the lead roles of Elphaba and Glinda are Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. Additionally, Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, Jonathan Bailey, and Ethan Slater help to round out the cast in supporting roles.

With all the exciting news surrounding the film, we are excited we will get to view it even sooner. For more exciting information regarding the film, be sure to follow its Instagram page here.
