Brian Cox went on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon ahead of the Succession season 4 premiere and humorously addressed his previous comments on method acting with a fake MasterClass clip.

Succession has become one of HBO’s biggest hits, but its run will end this year. Succession’s creator revealed earlier this year that season 4 would be the series last. Brian Cox stars as Logan Roy, media conglomerate billionaire, and patriarch, alongside Jeremy Strong (Kendall Roy), Sarah Snook (Shiv Roy), and Kieran Culkin (Roman Roy).

Succession is known for its tense family dynamics, but recently fans have suspected real-life tension between Cox and Strong. Cox has publicly expressed his disapproval of method acting ever since a profile from The New Yorker on Strong made headlines. Less than a week after the interview, Cox told a Toronto Film Festival audience, “I don’t hold a lot of the American [nonsense], having to have a ‘religious experience’ every time you play a part. It’s crap.”

Cox also expressed concern over Strong’s acting methods on Late Night with Seth Meyers. He shared that he worries about Strong possibly becoming burnt out. Cox did, however, note that “the result is always extraordinary and excellent.”

Ahead of the season 4 premiere this Sunday, the stars of the series have been making their rounds on the late-night talk shows. Cox visited The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, where he addressed his comments on method acting.

Cox explained to Fallon, “I’ve been a little harsh on it. And I’m sorry about that. In fact, I’ve been trying to set the record straight in a MasterClass series of acting….” A clip went on to play from the parody MasterClass series, where Cox shared the advice, “Just…do it! Say the… lines, and don’t bump into the…furniture.”

Cox also spoke about the end of Succession, sharing, “Jesse Armstrong, our great creator, he won’t let something go past its sell-by date.” Cox went on to explain that it felt right for the season to the series last, not expressing the same heartbreak as his fellow stars.

Both Strong and Cox have expressed that they enjoy working with one another. However, fans have speculated that there is more drama than the stars claim. A clip from the season 4 premiere this week has gone viral, with fans dissecting an interaction between Cox and Strong.

To keep up with the onscreen drama, Succession will make its return this Sunday at 9 pm ET for the season 4 premiere. In the meantime, seasons 1-3 are streaming on HBO Max.
