Barbie Ferreira set the record straight this week regarding her exit from the viral HBO series Euphoria. This comes after months of internet speculation on the reasoning behind the star’s departure.

Barbie Ferreira found global celebrity status for her embodiment of Kat Hernandez on the hit HBO series Euphoria. However, in August, Ferreira announced that she would not be returning for Season 3. Following this, rumors circulated the internet regarding Ferreira butting heads with the series’ creator, Sam Levinson. Claims surfaced that the pair had creative differences over Kat’s story, and at one point, Ferreira left the Euphoria set after an argument with Levinson. These rumors gained traction as fans noticed Kat’s storyline was sidelined in Season 2.

However, Ferreira set the record straight regarding her exit from the series on the Armchair Expert podcast. Ferreira confirmed her departure was a “mutual decision,” as Kat’s storyline had lost momentum. The star explained, “there were places [Kat] could have gone. I just don’t think it would have fit into the show. I don’t know if it was going to do her justice, and I think both parties knew that.”

Ferreira furthered, “Sam, me…it was a struggle to find the continuation of her. So that was actually really hurtful watching it and seeing the fans get upset. I just felt like maybe it’s like I overstayed my welcome a little bit?” Ferreira also emphasized, “I really wanted to be able to not be the fat best friend. I don’t want to play that, and I think they didn’t want that either.”

Ferreira concluded, “Sam writes…things that he relates to. I don’t think he relates to Kat. I like Kat, so I get to go on my own path. At first, I was like, ‘Oh, my God, I’m a flop. I’m a loser.’ It really has been a good thing.”

Ferreira also addressed the rumors, sharing, “I kind of got sucked into this drama…I’m of the mindset that if it doesn’t exist I’m not going to address it because then I’m adding fuel to it. It’s taken on a life of its own. Don’t believe everything you read.” Ferreira also denied walking off of the Euphoria set, explaining, “I did sprain my ankle once and had to go get an X-ray. Maybe that’s what they mean?”

Ferreira also spoke about how people reacted to her character in Euphoria’s second season. The star shared, “when people ask me about Season 2, it’s usually they come at me with, like, I was some sort of victim to Season 2 and I’m always like, ‘No, it’s okay, promise. It’s good.’”

Even though Ferreira cleared the air, many fans are still suspicious of Levinson’s intentions. This comes after his latest project, The Idol, was exposed for disturbing and sexist content. People have also begun to feel uneasy regarding his treatment of the female characters in Euphoria‘s second season.

Euphoria Season 3 will likely air on HBO in 2024. In the meantime, however, Euphoria seasons one and two are streaming on HBO Max.
