Grown-ish Will Be Ending With Its Upcoming Sixth Season
Television series have to face their graduation eventually. Unfortunately, that is happening to the hit spinoff Grown-ish, which is ending with its upcoming season.
On March 29, the college comedy series announced that its sixth season would be the last. The sixth and final season will be in two parts. The first half will air this summer, while the second half will air in 2024. Like the first five seasons, both halves of the final season will air on Freeform, as well as be available on Disney Plus. Sources have reported that it was a creative choice for the next season to be the last one, as this is what would be best for the series’ storytelling.

Along with the announcement of the series ending, creator Kenya Barris expressed his gratitude for Grown-ish. “We’ve spent nearly a decade telling our stories through the -ish series, and to say it has been an amazing journey would be an understatement,” Barris exclaimed, “To be able to watch Yara, Marcus and our entire Grown-ish family grow up in front of (and in many ways alongside) us over these past several years has been both a joy and an honor. From the stories we’ve told to the talent we’ve fostered and, most importantly, the memories made, I could not be more proud of everything we’ve accomplished and the -ish family I’ve been a part of.”

Seasons one through four of Grown-ish centered around college student Zoey Johnson (Yara Shahidi). Johnson attends the fictional California University of Liberal Arts. Along the way, she makes new friends, including Aaron (Trevor Jackson), Ana (Francia Raisa), Nomi (Emily Arlook), Vivek (Jordan Buhat), Jazz (Chloe Bailey), and Sky (Halle Bailey). She also learns about adulthood, romance, and everything college offers. In season five, the series focuses on Johnson’s younger brother Junior (Marcus Scribner), who is starting at the same college. He goes through similar college challenges as his sister, but he also has his own journey.

Grown-ish is a spinoff of Kenya Barris’s popular sitcom Black-ish. In that sitcom, Zoey and Junior were the children of Dre (Anthony Anderson) and Bow (Tracie Ellis Ross). The series was about a family juggling issues in their household and the world. The series ended in 2022 after eight seasons. Another series spinoff is Mixed-ish. This was about Bow’s upbringing as a mixed-race child in the 1980s. This series ended in 2021 after two seasons. Another spinoff called Old-ish, centered around Dre’s parents (Jennifer Lewis and Lawrence Fishburne), was in the works. However, it never came to be. The ending of Grown-ish will be the end of the ish franchise.
so hard to believe because they just bought junior.. there’s still so much more potential that the show can give. #Grownish https://t.co/le7Idq4nG4

Kenya Barris is responsible for all of the series in the ish franchise. He also worked on other popular series, such as developing America’s Next Top Model. Barris was also a writer on Girlfriends. In terms of film, he was a writer on Barbershop: The Next Cut, Girls Trip, and Coming 2 America. His most recent film, You People, came out on Netflix on January 27. He is currently working on a remake of White Men Can’t Jump. Even with Grown-ish ending, Barris is keeping busy.

So far, Grown-ish has 85 episodes. During the upcoming final season, it should reach the 100-episode milestone. Throughout its run, the series has generally had positive reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, Grown-ish is 95% fresh. On Metacritic, the series has a score of 71. Both of these scores are indicative of favorability. The series has also received many nominations for its work at many award shows. Those include MTV Movie & TV Awards, the Teen Choice Awards, the NAACP Image Awards, and the Creative Arts Emmys. Fans will certainly miss this series, but at least Grown-ish got to decide for itself when to end. While fans wait for the new season, seasons one through five are available to stream though Disney+.
