Wonka Unveils Its Exclusive Trailer at CinemaCon

Warner Brothers

The upcoming Wonka film has had anticipation for some time now. More details on the film have just been released by Warner Brothers, including a new trailer and some exciting casting.

CinemaCon took place from April 24 to April 27. This convention celebrates films of all kinds and premieres some exclusive trailers and movies. Films like The Flash and Barbie made special appearances. This is also where the trailer for Wonka appeared. Starring Timothée Chalamet, this film explores the origins of the famous fictional chocolatier Willy Wonka from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Last year’s CinemaCon had the first Wonka cottage, and this year’s convention had the first exclusive trailer.

Chalamet was at the convention where he displayed a lot of love for film. Chalamet commented, “This is a Willy that’s full of joy and hope and desire to become the greatest chocolatier.” When it came to embodying the chocolatier, the actor remarked that there was “too much chocolate.” Above all else, Chalamet expressed to the crowd that this role was “a dream come true.”

The trailer was at CinemaCon before its eventual release to the public. where there have already been discussions about it. It showcases a young Wonka living in London after traveling the world. Wonka dreams of opening a chocolate store, however, this is easier said than done. He will have to face some serious obstacles in order to reach his goals. This trailer does not have any of the children from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but much like that story, this will be a chocolatey adventure.

In addition, the trailer also introduced the audience to some new actors and characters. The role that has everybody talking is Hugh Grant, who will be an Oompa Loompa. Oompa Loompas were from the original films and books. They are short orange humanoids who serve as Wonka’s servants that work at his factory. Dozens of Oompa Loompas were in the movies, each indistinguishable from the other. It is unknown what role the Oompa Loompas will have in Wonka, but it is already clear that the casting of Grant as one is fairly comedic. Grant displayed his comedic chops earlier this year in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, which could continue with this film.

Along with Chalamet in the titular role and Grant as an Oompa Loompa, this film has many big names attached to it. Oscar nominee Sally Hawkins will be portraying Wonka’s dear mother. Oscar winner Olivia Colman will be in the movie as a Cockney innkeeper. Her relationship with Wonka is yet to be known. There will also be some newcomers in this film. The trailer also had up-and-comer Calah Lane as a friend of Wonka. Other cast members in the movie as currently unknown characters are Keegan Michael-Key, Rowan Atkinson, Matt Lucas, and more. The trailer gave a sneak peek of what will come.

Willy Wonka has had a long history. The character first made an appearance in Roald Dahl’s children’s novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in 1964. He was also in the novel’s sequel, Charlie and the Glass Elevator. Wonka made his first film appearance in 1971 in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, where Gene Wilder memorably portrayed the chocolatier. Wonka was next in the 2005 film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. This portrayal was by Johnny Depp. While this Wonka was more divisive, the character has always been a classic.

Wonka was not the only film that Chalamet was promoting at CinemaCon. He was also there to promote the upcoming Dune: Part 2, of which he is also the star. Along with Zendaya, Chalamet presented the exclusive trailer for the Dune sequel. Between these two films at CinemaCon, Chalamet is certainly a young star to look out for. If all goes well, one of these films could bring him his second Oscar nomination.

Wonka aims to be a one-of-a-kind angle to a classic book and films. The CinemaCon trailer has generated some buzz; only time will tell if that buzz and excitement will lead to financial and critical success.
