The film follows Bella Baxter (Emma Stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). The film eerily echoes Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, as Dr. Baxter brings Bella Baxter to life, where she is eager to learn the ways of the world. Viewers also watch Stone’s character receive electric shock therapy, with sparks flying out.

Bella wants to explore more of what the world has to offer; therefore, she “runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.”

In addition to the Frankenstein parallel, many have taken to social media to declare that Emma Stone shares an uncanny resemblance to someone else: Lorde. When the initial teaser photo of Stone dropped, many had to do a double-take, insisting that the actress is in fact Lorde in yet another Solar Power era music video.

Apart from Emma Stone (Cruella), Willem Dafoe (The Florida Project), and Mark Ruffalo (13 Going on 30), Poor Things also features Ramy Youssef (Ramy), Jerrod Carmichael (Love at the Store), and Christopher Abbot (Black Bear)The Favourite writer Tony McNamara penned the screenplay, based on the novel of the same name by Alasdair Gray.

We cannot be any more excited to see Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things. The film is slated for a September 8 release. In the meantime, fans can watch Emma Stone’s Academy Award-winning performance in Damien Chazelle’s La La Land opposite Ryan Gosling (Barbie). The teaser trailer is available to watch below.
