Elle Fanning recently revealed that she lost a major studio franchise role due to the number of followers she had on social media. That being said, Fanning noted that she does not feel pressured to take on those larger roles.

Fanning has made a name for herself starring in indie and artistically driven projects, such as A24’s 20th Century Woman. However, Fanning does have experience acting in franchise films, starring as Aurora in Maleficent and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. Currently, Fanning stars in the Hulu original, The Great, alongside Nicholas Hoult.

Recently, Fanning was asked on the Happy Sad Confused podcast if she felt pressure to join big studio franchises, in order to stay “relevant.” Fanning explained, “I don’t feel that [pressure]. I don’t.” The star did note, however, that large franchises can help other actors’ careers. Fanning continued, “You also don’t know if they’re going to work sometimes, which is scary.”

Fanning also confirmed that she has auditioned for big franchise movies in the past. She added that one time she did not land a franchise role because her social media following wasn’t large enough for the studio.

Fanning shared, “I did try out for…I’m not going to say what it was, but I didn’t get a part once for something big because – it might not have just been this reason, but this was the feedback that I heard – was because I didn’t have enough Instagram followers at the time.” She explained her confusion, adding, “So that was a little like…I firmly don’t believe in not getting a part [for that]. It was for a bigger thing, a franchise thing.”

Fanning further explained the process of accepting roles. She explained, “I would never say no to those things, but I would have to have a meeting and really talk to see what it is.” Fanning even mentioned her current costar’s experience with attempting to join a franchise. Fanning noted, “I didn’t have to go through what Nick did…they made him try the [Batman] suit on. You need a balance. If you want to do your indie work, especially in producing now…[having a big franchise] does make you breathe better.”

To keep up with Fanning, The Great Season 3 is now streaming on Hulu. Her full interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast is available below.
