At 81, Martha Stewart makes history as the oldest woman to be featured in the swimsuit issue of Sports Illustrated.

Known for its beautiful models, Sports Illustrated’s swimsuit issue has historically featured the likes of Tyra Banks and Kate Upton. As beauty standards have progressed and become more inclusive, so have the models gracing Sports Illustrated’s swimsuit issues. This year, the swimsuit issue models include Megan Fox, Angel Reese, Padma Lakshmi, Brooks Nader, Kim Petras, and none other than 81-year-old Martha Stewart.

Though Stewart is known for her cooking show, The Martha Stewart Show, she initially began her career as a model at fifteen years old. Over six decades later, she returns to her roots to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated in their most coveted issue of the year.

On Twitter, the magazine hyped up the issue, assuring audiences that “when we said this year was going to be epic, we meant it.”

“When I heard that I was going to be on the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit, I thought, ‘Oh, that’s pretty good, I’m going to be the oldest person I think ever on a cover of Sports Illustrated.’ And I don’t think about age very much, but I thought that this is kind of historic,” she revealed on The Today Show, where the issue was unveiled.

On Instagram, the model further touched on the confidence she utilized in preparing for the cover shoot and shared her wisdom. “Trying new things is very good. Being fearless is very good. Don’t be afraid of anything,” she advised.

However, the shoot did not come without internal hesitations. In an interview with The New York Times, she revealed that although she agreed with unabashed confidence, she put in a lot of work to be swimsuit-ready for the cover. She also acknowledged the unconventional nature of her cover. The star admitted that “when the offer came, I thought, “I can do this. I don’t have to give in to convention.” How else would I, as an 81-year-old, have talked myself into feeling good about getting into a bathing suit?”

Although Stewart may be the most talked-about cover, there are four different swimsuit issue covers available. Aside from Stewart, the likes of Megan Fox, Kim Petras, and Brooks Nader appear on alternative covers for the issue. Fans can buy all four covers on the official Sports Illustrated website.
