Katy Perry earned her fourth RIAA diamond certification on her hit single “California Gurls,” becoming the female artist with the most diamond singles and surpassing Lady Gaga and Cardi B.

The RIAA awards both singles and albums gold, platinum, multiplatinum, and diamond certifications. A gold award is given when a single or album sells 500,000 units, a platinum award requires 1 million units sold, and a multiplatinum award requires 2 million or more units sold. Diamond certification is achieved when a single or album reaches 10 times platinum, selling 10 million units.

This is a notoriously difficult certification to obtain and, as of 2023, there have been just over 100 certified diamond singles. Perry had previously been tied with Lady Gaga and Cardi B for the most diamond awards by a female artist but has since pulled ahead with her fourth certification. Perry has earned diamond singles for her songs “Firework,” “Dark Horse,” “Roar,” and most recently, “California Gurls” featuring Snoop Dogg.

“California Gurls” was released in 2010 as the lead single from Perry’s album Teenage Dream. The single was massively popular and maintained its top spot on the Hot 100 list for over a month. Teenage Dream remains one of Perry’s most successful albums and it’s certified as nine-times platinum.

Fans took to Twitter to celebrate Perry’s new diamond single.

Perry is currently performing in residency at Resort World Las Vegas in her show PLAY, which features all four songs.

The final dates have just been announced, with the last performance taking place on November 4. Tickets for Katy Perry’s upcoming shows are available on her website.
