Is there anything that Greta Gerwig can’t do? The director will soon leave Barbie Land behind and head into The Chronicles of Narnia.

Gerwig’s highly anticipated film, Barbie, is premiering in theaters this summer on July 21. She already has another project on the horizon, as she is slated to direct a feature film based on The Chronicles of Narnia books for Netflix.

The deal is rumored to have her behind the camera for two adaptations of the C.S. Lewis franchise.

The deal is rumored to have her behind the camera for two adaptations of the C.S. Lewis franchise.

Back in 2018, Ted Sarandos, the Chief Executive Officer at Netflix, stated, “Families have fallen in love with characters like Aslan and the entire world of Narnia, and we’re thrilled to be their home for years to come.”

Ever since that announcement in 2018, no projects have moved forward. However, having Gerwig re-imagine the beloved books is a step in the right direction.

The director is no stranger to book adaptations. In 2019, she adapted Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women. She joined forces once again with Lady Bird leads Timothée Chalamet (Laurie) and Saoirse Ronan (Jo March). Her stacked cast also featured Florence Pugh (Amy March), Emma Watson (Meg March), Eliza Scanlen (Beth March), Meryl Streep (Aunt March), Laura Dern (Marmee), and Bob Odenkirk (Father March).

The film received six Oscar nominations: Best Actress (Saoirse Ronan), Best Supporting Actress (Florence Pugh), Best Original Score, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Picture, and Best Costume Design. Little Women also won the Academy Award for Best Costume Design.

Gerwig has previously worked with Netflix on films Frances Ha (2012) and White Noise (2022). We look forward to hearing more about Gerwig’s world of Narnia.

While anxiously awaiting more information, fans can secure their tickets to Gerwig’s Barbie. The film promises to be the film of the summer.
