Jenna Ortega is making history with her Emmy nomination for her role of Wednesday Addams in the hit Netflix series Wednesday.

Ortega, who is just twenty years old, is the second youngest actress ever to be nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. She is also the youngest Latina acting nominee of all time. Patty Duke was three years younger than Ortega when she received the same nomination in 1964 for her role in The Patty Duke Show.

In total, the hit Netflix series has earned twelve nominations. Tim Burton, the director and executive producer of the series, has also received his first-ever Emmy nomination for Best Directing for a Comedy Series. Although Ortega has accepted the nomination, she will be up against tough competition. Christina Applegate in Dead To Me, Rachel Brosnahan in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Quinta Brunson in Abbott Elementary, and Natasha Lyonne in Poker Face are all nominated alongside Ortega in the category.

Since 2008, when the Television Academy nominated America Ferrera for her role in Ugly Betty, Ortega has been the first Latina nominee in the category. Alongside Ortega, Pedro Pascal also makes history as the most-nominated Latino in a single year. Representing Latino actresses and actors is essential for diversity in television and film.

Ortega, who is of Mexican and Puerto Rican descent, quickly received support from her fans upon the historical nomination. Many shared their enthusiasm on Twitter, especially since Netflix renewed the series for a second season in early 2023. The series has gained a lot of positive attention and broke the record for most hours viewed in a single week for any English-language television series on Netflix.

To see if Ortega’s nomination turns into a win, catch the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards live on Monday, September 18, at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.
