Doja Cat reveals that her new music will depart from her pop projects and take on a sound more representative of who she truly is.

In an interview on Monday, with V Magazine, Doja Cat spoke about how her past, more mainstream projects, don’t reflect the music she wants to make.

“I have been making music that is palatable, marketable, and sellable, that has allowed me to be where I am,” she stated. “Now I am making music that allows me to express the way I feel about the world around me.”

This is not the first time Doja Cat has commented about wanting to switch up her sound. In May, she took to Twitter to call her last two albums “cash-grabs” and “mediocre pop” in a now-deleted tweet.

In an interview with V Magazine, Doja Cat added that she’s excited about the new musical direction she’s taking with these upcoming projects, and she “[does] not care if people are not.”

Doja Cat also shared more about the music that she’s currently working on and how it reflects her style and emotions.

“I have made pop music. I’m currently making rap, soul, and R&B music with jazz elements,” she stated. “But this is a representation of how I feel. When I wear black, when I wear metal, or very scantily clad outfits… it’s all a representation of how angry, liberated, and sexual I am.”

Her June 16 single, “Attention,” seems representative of this new era for Doja Cat with its hip-hop and jazz-inspired sound. The lyrics defend against the critical opinions of her on the internet and embrace who she is despite the hate.

When asked about the role of outsiderness in her art, Doja Cat told V Magazine that part of her message is inspiring others to be who they really are.

“We are all really f*cking weird, and we are all trying to hide it, or afraid to do certain things, hiding it due to our upbringing,” she stated. “It is for sure something that is part of my message, to inspire people that think that they can’t be what they want to be because they are told by others that they can’t.”

In anticipation of Doja’s fourth studio album, which she stated will be released in 2023, you can listen to “Attention” on all streaming platforms
