Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn stars Euphoria star Jacob Elordi and Oscar-nominee Barry Keoghan. The film is produced by Fennell and Margot Robbie.

Set in the mid-2000s, Saltburn follows Oliver Quick (Barry Keoghan), a smart but introverted student at Oxford University, struggling to make friends. Oliver becomes infatuated with Felix Catton (Jacob Elordi), an outgoing and affluent fellow student. Felix invites Oliver to spend the summer with him at his family’s luxurious estate, not knowing what will ensue.

The film is Fennell’s sophomore feature following her Oscar-winning directorial debut, Promising Young Woman. Carey Mulligan is also joining the cast of Saltburn alongside Rosamund Pike and Richard E. Grant.

At its core, Saltburn is a “beautifully wicked tale of privilege and desire,” according to Amazon Studios. Early images from the film capture the family’s beautiful sprawling estate. The film has been compared to Anthony Minghella’s The Talented Mr. Ripley, in what Fennell describes as a “very British tale of excess.”

In addition, the film has claimed the opening slot at the 2023 BFI London Film Festival. Saltburn will premiere internationally on October 4 at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall in London, and a US premiere is expected sometime in the fall. MGM and Amazon Studios are releasing the film in theaters on November 24.

Fennell released a statement regarding the festival’s decision to open with Saltburn: “I’m honored that our film is able to open this year’s BFI London Film Festival. It is a festival that inspired me so much growing up, one that I followed excitedly from my bedroom on the other side of London. It feels extra-special that ‘Saltburn,’ this very British tale of excess, is able to make its international debut at the wonderful BFI.”

The 2023 BFI London Film Festival is Kristy Matheson’s first time as the festival’s director. Matheson praised the film, stating: “As soon as the credits rolled on ‘Saltburn’ it was clear we’d met our opening night film. Academy Award winner Emerald Fennell returns with an expertly crafted and exhilarating thrill ride of a film that showcases an enormous depth of U.K. talents in front of and behind the camera. With its exceptional performances, delicious plot twists and a soundtrack of early 21st century pop bangers; this hugely ambitious film immediately stole our hearts and we can’t wait to share it with audiences in London and across the U.K. this October.”

Saltburn hits theaters November 24.
