Peter Do Reignites 1990s Helmut Lang in New Collection at NYFW
Helmut Lang isn’t a name you often hear these days, especially when it comes to New York Fashion Week. However, the brand’s new creative director, Peter Do, brings back the 1990s flare it once had.
On May 15, the brand appointed Peter Do as their new creative director. Considering the buzz it’s generating in the fashion industry, it is a seemingly good move. The New York Times fashion editor and chief fashion critic Venessa Friedman wistfully recalled her Helmut Lang pantsuit and what the brand was like before Mr. Lang left in 2005.
“His clothes caught an angsty, disaffected cultural mood and a moment and then transcended them, which made him enormously influential in both the micro (individual) and macro (industry) sense,” she stated.

While Mr. Lang’s designs defied the corporate standard of a pantsuit, Mr. Do’s artistic signatures are described as “dramatic, elegant silhouettes,” offering a “grown-up, intellectual glamour made to last forever.”

Grown-up is a fitting definition considering the direction of Mr. Do’s designs for his first show as the brand’s new creative director. A mix between Mr. Lang’s sensual tension of his 1990s designs and Mr. Do’s current distinguished theatrical styles reinvented the brand charismatically. The show paid homage to Mr. Do’s predecessor, recreating Helmut Lang’s great design but with a more mature twist.
Gone with the bondage, in their place lay seat belts strapped to the models over the well-known sharp and bold suits, a bright colored stripe contrasting the neutrality of a dark suit, and a sheer willowy mini dress in the season’s “It” color red.

Peter Do’s creative essence molds nicely to the lingering remnants of Mr. Lang’s previous designs. The fashion industry looks forward to the brand’s new future alongside its new creative director.
