Emmy-winning actor Andre Braugher has passed away at 61 years old after losing his battle with an illness. He was known for his roles in the popular series Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Homicide: Life on the Street.

Braugher gained recognition for portraying the principled Captain Raymond Holt on the police procedural comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine from 2013 to 2021. His character’s stoic, no-nonsense demeanor quickly became a beloved figure on the sitcom. This was particularly evident in scenes alongside Andy Samberg’s spirited Detective Jake Peralta, contributing to their dynamic appeal.

While Braugher added comedic roles to his résumé, he is most notably remembered for his intense portrayal of Detective Frank Pembleton in the NBC drama Homicide: Life on the Street. Placing him in “the box,” where he confronted and outsmarted crime suspects in the interrogation room, provided a weekly display of his exceptional acting prowess—considered among the finest on television at that time. The actor starred in the drama from 1992 to 1998 and earned an Emmy for his outstanding work. Adding a personal touch, his wife, Ami Brabson, made recurring appearances as Pembleton’s wife on Homicide.

According to Deadline, which initially reported Braugher’s passing, he was slated to take on a leading role in the upcoming Netflix series, “The Residence.” Although he achieved numerous successes, Variety reported in 2020 that Braugher had yet to secure a leading role in a project that attained commercial success. Braugher conveyed to the outlet that opting to prioritize his family and personal life at various stages in his career could have constrained his professional success.

“It’s been an interesting career, but I think it could have been larger,” he stated. “I think it could have spanned more disciplines: directing, producing, all these other different things. But it would have been at the expense of my own life.”

Furthermore, the She Said actor was known to keep his personal life a secret. However, he did encounter “stumbling blocks.”

“I won’t go into details, but I have not always been at the top of my game, and that has a cost,” he told The New York Times in 2014. “There won’t be a memoir.”

Fans have expressed their sadness for Braugher’s passing. The beloved actor still lives through his work.
