Christian Bale’s American Psycho is a cult classic set in the 80s that is still relevant today. Rumors of a remake by Lionsgate brought emotions out, and fans expressed their opinions on social media.

This remake is not yet confirmed, but people already have strong opinions on it. Some can see its potential and believe it can be great, like the original one, while others don’t think it’s needed and that the original still stands on its own.

Most arguments against the remake are about how the film was released not too long ago. The film’s themes are still relevant today, and Christian Bale still is a well-known actor. Also, the film had resurfaced fame among early Gen-Z.

On top of that, this film has developed a strong cult following, and remaking it can disturb the “perfection” fans see in the original one. Another big concern is that any actor who takes on the role won’t get to the level of Bale’s acting, and no matter what, it will end up falling flat.

The other side of this argument is in support of the remake. Even though the original one wasn’t released long ago, things have changed considerably. In the 2000s, there was no social media, no influencers, and even though people had phones, they didn’t have the high-quality cameras everyone has nowadays.

In addition, people are excited thinking of who would take on the role of portraying Patrick Bateman. Some names that have been popular on social media are Tom Holland, Charles Melton, Finn Wittrock, and even some gender-swapping options like Anna Kendrick and Allison Williams.

Holland, Melton, and Wittrock have all portrayed characters who needed a lot of emotional layers. They were all praised for their acting in their respective roles. Some of the characteristics people expect from the actors are that they are conventionally attractive like Bale was when they recorded the film.

Another area open for change is when the film will take place. The original is placed in the 80s and recorded in the 2000s, and it makes fun of certain ideals and trends of the time. The new remake could look back at the 80s from a perspective of our time. It could be placed 20 years in the past like the original one, and that would be the 2000s, coinciding with when the film was released.

Lastly, it could be in the present and look at the characters’ personalities in a world where opinions change based on social media posts, and the pressure to succeed is stronger than ever.

A recent report by The Insneider revealed that Lionsgate is looking for a writer for the remake of American Psycho. There hasn’t been an official announcement of the remake yet, but in the meantime, you can watch the original here.
