New Netflix Drama Ripley Premieres This Week
Netflix is bringing the thrilling journey of conman Tom Ripley to screens this week. Here’s a first look at the new drama-filled crime series, Ripley.
Based on Patricia Highsmith’s bestselling novels, Ripley follows All of Us Strangers’ star Andrew Scott as the mysterious and deceitful Ripley. The Irishman’s Steve Zaillian writes, directs, and produces the limited series.
Set in the 1960s, a wealthy industrialist hires Ripley to venture to Italy and convince his son, Dickie Greenleaf, to return home. As the New York grifter seeks to complete the job, he enters a world of murder, deceit, and fraud.
Ripley consists of eight suspense-filled episodes. In addition to Scott, Johnny Flynn, Dakota Fanning, Eliot Sumner, and Maurizio Lombardi appear in the series.
Flynn portrays Dickie, with Fanning as his onscreen girlfriend, Marge Sherwood. Fanning’s character questions Ripley’s motives in befriending Dickie and suspects darker incentives behind the roguish protagonist’s arrival.

Additionally, Sumner appears as Freddie Miles, and Lombardi depicts Inspector Ravini. Further details about their characters are yet to be announced.
Scott succeeds Good Will Hunting star Matt Damon, as the actor previously took on the role in the 1999 film The Talented Mr. Ripley. About his performance, the BAFTA Television Award-winner revealed to Vanity Fair, “I found it mentally and physically really hard. That’s just the truth of it.”
So far, Netflix released two trailers for the dark drama. They explore the enigmatic nature of the main character, with his counterparts discussing how they view Ripley. The audience also gains insight into the protagonist’s art of deception, as they see him mimic speech patterns, falsify documents, lie to his peers, and hide evidence.
Furthermore, the trailer ends with a dark twist as Ravini narrates, “Someone is dead in Rome, and Signore Ripley is missing.” Viewers have to tune in to the series to discover how the mysterious death unfolds.
Fans can also get a sneak peek at the Sherlock star in the role through the photos published on Tudum, the streaming platform’s official companion site. They showcase Ripley interacting with Fanning and Flynn’s characters, posing for a portrait, and falling further into a dark world.
Ripley premieres on Netflix on April 4. Until its release, viewers can watch the trailer below.
