First Look At All of Us Strangers Hints at Fantastical Romance
Searchlight Pictures revealed an early image from Andrew Haigh’s All of Us Strangers starring Oscar-nominee, Paul Mescal and BAFTA-winner, Andrew Scott.
All of Us Strangers is set to be Searchlight Pictures’ third December release prior to the Oscar nomination deadline. The film was directed by Haigh, who also wrote the screenplay. All of Us Strangers is loosely based on the Japanese novel Strangers by Taichi Yamada. Haigh previously directed the critically-acclaimed queer film, Weekend.
The film stars Scott, who has received widespread praise for his recent work in Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s hit television series, Fleabag. Alongside Scott is his co-star, Mescal. Mescal earned an Oscar nomination this past year for his work in the independent drama, Aftersun, for which he was nominated for Best Actor. Another one of Mescal’s upcoming films, Ridley Scott’s Gladiator 2, is set to pause production amidst the SAG-AFTRA strike.
Additionally, Jamie Bell and Claire Foy are among Haigh’s star-studded cast. Scott spoke with Goss.ie earlier this year to discuss the film and his “great chemistry” with co-star Mescal.
“I wouldn’t describe it as a rom-com, it’s quite dark. But there is rom in it, and I suppose there’s a bit of com in it, so maybe it is a rom-com! But it’s an unusual sort of one,” Scott stated at the 2023 IFTA Film and Drama Awards.
The actor praised Mescal’s acting abilities, exclaiming, “Paul is a superstar and he’s a beautiful, beautiful person inside and out. It was just a great pleasure to work with an Irish person. Irish boys abroad! We had an immediate short-hand with each other, and I’m very excited for everyone to see it.”
Scott and Mescal are both from Ireland and even attended the same university, Trinity College Dublin.

Scott made it clear that chemistry between actors is integral to storytelling, even in scenes that are not inherently romantic.
“I don’t want to give anything away, but you’re required to have chemistry no matter what you’re doing with people,” he stated.
Searchlight Pictures released an official synopsis for the film, reading, “One night in his near-empty tower block in contemporary London, Adam (a screenwriter, played by Andrew Scott) has a chance encounter with his mysterious neighbor Harry (Paul Mescal) that punctures the rhythm of his everyday life. As Adam and Harry get closer, Adam is pulled back to his childhood home where it appears his long-dead parents (Claire Foy and Jamie Bell) are both living and look the same age as the day they died thirty years before.”
All of Us Strangers comes to theaters on December 22.
