Paul McCartney Shows Support for Beyoncé in New Post
Following the success and controversy surrounding Cowboy Carter, the writer of “Blackbird” made sure to give Beyoncé her flowers.
If you’ve been keeping up with music news, you’ll know that legendary artist Beyoncé has just released her newest album, Cowboy Carter. The album has an extensive track list, bridging the gap between Carter’s pop background and her exploration of country music. The project also features covers of iconic and timeless works, including “Blackbird” by The Beatles.
As of the morning of April 4, one of the creators of the original song, Beatles member Paul McCartney, has released a statement regarding the success of the Cowboy Carter album and Beyoncé’s work with “Blackbird.”
While some may believe that “Blackbird” is for The Beatles only, Paul McCartney was inspired by the Civil Rights Movement, with the term “Blackbird” referring to the struggles black people, specifically Black women, were facing at the time.
McCartney touched on this more in the post, stating that “she does a magnificent version of it [‘Blackbird’], and it reinforces the civil rights message that inspired me to write the song in the first place. I think Beyoncé has done a fab version and would urge anyone who has not heard it yet to check it out. You are going to love it!”

“I spoke to her on FaceTime and she thanked me for writing it and letting her do it. I told her the pleasure was all mine and I thought she had done a killer version of the song.” pic.twitter.com/YQrpCpSsIa
The collaboration between the two is nothing but one of admiration and support, with the song being another way to call attention to racial injustice, with McCartney writing, “When I saw the footage on the television in the early 60s of the black girls being turned away from school, I found it shocking and I can’t believe that still in these days there are places where this kind of thing is happening right now. Anything my song and Beyoncé’s fabulous version can do to ease racial tension would be a great thing and makes me very proud.”
