The Jonas Brothers’ New Single ‘Listen When Sad’ Feels Like a Hug From Our Teenage Years
If you’re suddenly feeling a bit nostalgic, you can thank the Jonas Brothers. The trio recently released their new single, “Listen When Sad,” a punk rock track that feels like a hug from their 2000s era — right when we needed it most.
The brothers teamed up with John Fields, the producer behind their early albums, including their self-titled record (2007), A Little Bit Longer (2008), and Lines, Vines, and Trying Times (2009), for a track that’s reminiscent of their yesteryears. But after a string of pop albums following their 2019 reunion, “Listen When Sad” feels fresh enough to stand on its own — and perhaps even more exciting for their current era.
The chorus, “Do you remember the summer she gave you her number? / On the back of that CD that she burned last spring, ‘Listen when sad and then call me’ / We’d leave through the windows, we knew things we still don’t / Singing Taking Back Sunday on the way back home, just sixteen, we felt so old,” tracks over guitar chords with an easily distinctive early-2000s texture that turns memories into something a bit more bittersweet. And that’s the exact feeling the Jonas Brothers were going for. I attended the second of three nights of their “Burning Up Tour: All Over Again,” where they performed the song for the second time ever. Nick Jonas explained that they wanted to make music that tapped into a sound that has since become few and far between, specifically mentioning Fall Out Boy as an inspiration.
“The new single reflects a deliberate return to the sound that started it all,” their label teased.
Fueling the aesthetic even further, fans in attendance at Madison Square Garden were gifted a CD of the single with their merch purchase — a small but telling detail that suggests “Listen When Sad” may be more than a one-off project. According to the brothers, plenty more announcements are on the way, so if this is the beginning of a new Jonas Brothers era, give us a minute to update our MySpace.
